We had a local shooting in our small town. A woman was wielding a knife in a home where two men were present. When the police showed up the officer suspected the woman was in a manic episode and called for medical. However, his protocol was then to secure the premises, which means to get this person disarmed. The officer did what he was trained to do. He pulled a gun and demanded the knife be dropped. The problem is this protocol does not work for someone in a manic episode. He shot and killed her.
